Kochi(Cochin) one of the South India's most interesting towns, rich in history,despite rapid recent growth it retains a relaxed, quiet atmosphere. Kochiis a sea port for centuries, once it was the commercial hub for the Arabs,British, Chinese, Dutch, Italians and Portuguese. The peculiar Chinese fishing nets found here, the only place outside China where it has been spotted.Kochi was formed in 1967 by the merger of the towns - Fort Kochi,Mattanchery, Ernakulam and many nearby villages. While visiting Kerala onecannot go without visiting the city.
Tourist attractions as follows :-
Mattancherry Palace - The palace was built by the Portuguese as a gift for the Raja of Kochi in exchange for trading rights.
Synagogue - Built by the Jews is a master piece datingfrom 1568 and rebuilt in 1662 is near the Mattancherry Palace. At present the area is called Jews town.
St. Francis Church - Originally dedicated to Santo Antonio, the patron saint of Portugal, St. Francis church is the first to reflect the new European influenced tradition.
Santa Cruz Cathedral - Originally built in1557 by Portuguese, and used as a warehouse by the British in the 18th century and rebuilt again in the early 20th century. It has lovely carved wooden panels and pulpit, and an interesting graveyard.
Chinese fishing nets - The cantilevered fishing nets line the entrance to the harbour mouth. Chinese traders are believed to have originally introduced them in the lat 14th century although,today parts of the nets are known by Portuguese names.
Bolghatty Island - The Palace, it was originally built by the Dutch in 1745 and then became the home of the British Resident at the court of the Raja of Kochi after 1799. At present it is converted into a hotel.
Willingdon Island - has become the hub of one of India's busiest ports. The Custom's House and the Malabar Hotel are to the North of Naval airport and the rail terminus.
Vypeen Island - with the Portuguese Azhikotta Fort, built around 1503. Youcan see cannon holes on the walls of the octagonal fort which was garrisoned by20 soldiers when it guarded the entrance to the backwaters.
Kathakali Dance Show - One must see the Kathakali dance performance and witnessthe make up of the performers. It takes place every evening 16.30 PM make upstart and Kathakali dance show starts at 18.30 one hour show. | | |
